Employee identification badges emerged in American factories in the early twentieth century, driven by the same impulse toward legibility that produced time clocks, employee numbers, and employee handbooks. Large industrial plants, employing thousands of workers across multiple shifts, needed a way to determine who belonged on the premises and who did not.1

During World War I and World War II, defense contractors adopted badge systems to control access to sensitive manufacturing facilities. The U.S. government required identification badges at plants producing military equipment, transforming a workplace convenience into a security protocol.2

The technology evolved with the security industry. Simple printed badges gave way to photo IDs in the mid-twentieth century, then to magnetic stripe cards in the 1970s and 1980s, and eventually to RFID-enabled smart cards that tracked not only entrance and exit but movement within buildings. Each generation of technology increased the precision with which employers could monitor workers' physical locations.3

The badge became an object of symbolic significance beyond its functional purpose. Returning a badge on the last day of work became a corporate ritual of separation. Being "badged in" meant belonging.

By the early twenty-first century, some technology companies had replaced physical badges with smartphone-based authentication systems that opened doors, logged attendance, and granted access to building amenities, collapsing the functions of the badge into the device workers already carried everywhere.4

The original purpose, distinguishing insiders from outsiders at the factory gate, persisted in every subsequent version of the technology. The badge answered a question that mattered only in organizations large enough for anonymity, the question of whether a human body was authorized to occupy a particular space.5
